Tenerife weather and climate in Tenerife

Tenerife is known as the island of eternal spring. The average temperatures can drop to around 18 degrees in winter and rise to 28 to 30 in the summer. Tenerife is divided by a mountain range which creates two very different climates. South of the island is dry and hot. North is cooler and greener. There are some cloudy days and even a few rainy days, in general the climate of Tenerife is very moderate. The weather in Tenerife can be completely different depending on where you are on the island; for example in winter time one can be playing in the snow in the national park and an hour later be playing on the beach or having a swim. The north has a much wetter climate than the south hence the much greener landscape. The national park in the centre of the Island, being the highest part of Spain, can have daily temperature fluctuations of 25 degrees Celsius, below freezing at night yet sun bathing weather during the day. El Teide can be topped off with snow and suffering cold winds, whilst the beaches in the south are enjoying hot sunshine. Tenerife receives three different winds, the “lower trade winds” which blow at an altitude of less than 1,500 meters; these cooler North Easterly winds blow all year round but are stronger in the winter. The hotter, dry winds coming in from the Sahara desert in Africa tend to bring a ‘kalima’ with them, this consists of very fine particles of sand which are so light that they are suspended in the air giving a very hazy, murky look to the air, this generally lasts about four days and is not very frequent. The main cause of rains in Tenerife are the Atlantic storms, most likely to arrive between November and March and can be forecast quite accurately, the planes take off in the ‘wrong’ direction and the neighbouring westerly islands appear crystal clear, this tells all who live here to be prepared for rain the next day. Air conditioning is quite rare, with overhead fans usually providing sufficient air movement to stay cool, even during the height of summer. We can enjoy wonderful weather in one of the world’s best and most delightful climates. Tenerife offers a surprising variety of micro-climatic weather zones, enabling people to choose their climate, depending on where they live. Southern Tenerife costal areas enjoy the most sunshine, the best weather, the least clouds and higher temperatures.
