Tenerife Golf

Golf in Tenerife was almost unheard of until around 1987 when Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf opened the first nine holes of their respective courses and started the long haul of promoting Tenerife golfing holidays. Previous to this the only course was in the north of Tenerife (El Penon) and was primarily a members course reserved for the elite of the island; they did and still do, accept bookings from non-members before 10 AM and it is worthwhile playing this lovely old course.

These first two golf courses in Tenerife (south) were followed by Golf Las Americas and Adeje Golf which greatly helped the promotion of Tenerife as a destination for holiday golfers. All of these courses plus the new Buenavista golf course in the north-west of Tenerife have been used for various European competitions enabling each one to use the word championship in their descriptions.

Tenerife Golf has not neglected the beginners, or those wishing to sharpen their short game, with nine hole pitch and put golf courses at Guaza (Los Palos) Puerto de la Cruz (La Rosaleda) and Las Chafiras (Amarilla Golf).

The number of Tenerife golf courses is still growing with Abama Golf resort due to open in 2005 at Playa San Juan plus at least three others due to start construction work very shortly. With the positive support of the island governments solidly behind them the promoters of Tenerife Golf and Tenerife golf holidays should be confident that, providing they can offer competitive packages with well maintained courses, they must have a very promising future.

Tenerife Golf has an enormous advantage over almost any other golfing destination, this being the wonderful all year round climate; particularly in the south of Tenerife we have very few days during the year when we are ‘rained off’. The temperatures in the winter months are warm enough to play in shorts and shirt while the summer months are not over hot and golfers normally enjoy refreshing breezes to keep conditions at almost ideal levels.

Many golf courses in Tenerife have property developed around the fairways in the form of both villas and apartments to help to offset the development and maintenance costs; water for daily irrigation of all parts of the course is a large factor in the running costs of Tenerife golf courses. This golf property offers golfing holidaymakers the opportunity being conveniently situated in a beautiful, tranquil setting with the added advantage of being close to the starters office saving travelling time.
