Holidays in Tenerife
The days of people saving up all year for their annual week or fortnight’s holiday have long gone in affluent Europe; not so many years ago a holiday in Tenerife would have been a luxury that the majority of us could only dream of. Tenerife holidays have also changed dramatically. The accommodation in Tenerife has changed so much that holiday-makers of even as recently as thirty years ago would be astounded if they had not returned and seen the changes year by year.
A hundred years ago there was a miniscule Tenerife holiday industry in the island, this was made up mostly of wealthy British who used to come and stay in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island; many of those were not tourists as such but rather people who came to escape the harsh northern winters on their doctor’s advice. This is not so different to nowadays apart from the numbers and the accessibility of the market to an ever more affluent population in Europe.
Nowadays many people don’t take just their holidays in Tenerife in the summer but will take another Tenerife holiday in the winter, and with the advent of teletext and the internet it can be a very simple matter to access a last minute deal at incredibly cheap prices. Internet bookings now account for around fifty per cent of holidays in Tenerife, an astonishing growth in just a few years; and despite this phenomenal increase there are still many small and medium sized hotels without even an e-mail address let alone a website!
Holidays in Tenerife are not restricted to hotels alone although there is a complete range of hotels in Tenerife from the modest pension or hostel right through to the ultra modern five star resorts, not forgetting the latest category of ‘hoteles rurales’. These are usually old houses or buildings that have been renovated and converted into surprisingly comfortable and affordable accommodation for holidays in Tenerife. The majority of the mid range hotel holidays in Tenerife are supplied by the large package tour operators who are seeing their traditional domination of the market decline as more and more people become used to that marvellous tool called the internet.
Self catering holidays in Tenerife are increasingly popular and judging by the number of apartment blocks that have been built or are under construction they’ll be available for as long as people wish to holiday in Tenerife. Many women used to prefer to stay in hotels so that they had a complete rest from housework; however with the increasing willingness those holidaymakers now show towards eating ‘foreign’ food, the inexpensiveness of the local restaurants encourage large numbers to eat out every night. This gives one the convenience of getting up and having meals at a time to suit oneself instead of suiting the hotel staff.
Whichever type of accommodation in Tenerife you chose I wish you many happy and varied holidays in Tenerife.
